Angry

Wed Mar 11, 2009, 6:29 PM
So I just got back my linguistics midterm. I got an 89%, and I'm really upset. Which is ridiculous, because an 89% isn't bad. It's almost an A.
But what I'm wondering is what kind of society I'm living in that when I don't get an A on a test, I feel like jumping into traffic. What sort of things are people teaching their children?
I need to get an A in this class, because I already failed out of my precalculus. I had to drop it. I need to get A's in my other three classes, because I don't want to be a fuck up anymore. This is my second attempt at college. I'm waking up early, driving an hour and a fucking half to campus, studying my ass off, and working on afternoons and weekends. I need to do well in school. Prove that I'm good at something.

I can empathize. Nowadays people judge you on how well you do in school and how much money you make after you graduate.

In the words of the late George Carlin, "it's all bullshit and it's all bad for ya".

Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Gah, I know what you mean. I mean, I'm in highschool, and my dad lectures me on a daily basis on "If you don't get all As, you won't get into a good college, and you'll end up working in Wal-Mart." Thanks for the support, dad?

In other news... THE GREAT GATSBY! 8D F. Scott Fitzgerald is currently my favorite author. I haven't read Gatsby yet, but I'm reading his big collection of Jazz Age tales, which includes Benjamin Button. ^^ Plan on reading Gatsby next. He's a great author!

Anyway I hope things get better and you do well in your courses! <3

Gatsby ROCKS HARDCORE. It is an awesome book.

Oh. Wow. I know the feeling. I sucked at A Levels and although my one of my parents doesn't care what I get, it's totally obvious that the other wanted me to go to Uni, and often makes it clear that I am not up to standard with my siblings. I think this is the first time in my life that I have been specifically told by my lecturer they don't care what grade people in the class get, as long as you have learned what is necessary for the industry by the time you leave. Yet still, here I am, struggling vainly for a Distinction, and for what? Just so I can shove it in other people's faces and prove I did something. =_=

I have to admit though, America is a lot bigger on the whole "Straight A's" thing. I don't know why, but you just don't see that so much over here. :\ And to be honest I think it's a good thing. I don't see why grades should be so important, and take prevailance over things like happiness and health.

Good luck to you though, you're doing better than I sure as heck ever could.

Oh and I totally just realised you're doing The Great Gatsby. I'm sure it's a brilliant book but we tore it to pieces in A Level and now I can't stand it. Maybe I should dig out my notes sometime and go over it again.

Awesome! I'm excited to read it! =D But it'll have to be put off. I just bought Brideshead Revisited. >3<
